Fight Night 12/30/2011

Last night was the last fight night for 2011, we spent it in our usual manner; the guys in the living room of my parents house and the women in the backroom watching TLC. We were there for an extended length of time, i.e. we didn't get home until 11:45 PM; during this time I was able to crochet my little guy a frog hat. Below is a picture of Garik's new frog hat.

To make this hat I used Lion Brand: Jiffy in Apple Green (MC), Black (A), and White (B) and an I (5.5m) crochet hook. My favorite hat pattern (which loosely fits my 5 month old), which I used for the frog hat is as follows:

With MC Create a magic circle, dc 10
R1: 2 dc twice in each st; sl st into first dc (20); ch 2
R2: *2 dc, 1 dc in next st* Repeat (30); sl st into first dc, ch 2
R3: *2 dc, dc in next 2 st* Repeat (40); sl st into first dc, ch 2
R4 - R9: *dc in each st* Repeat (40); sl st into first dc, ch 1
R10: *sc in each st* Repeat (40); sl st into first sc, with A ch 1
R11: (with A), *sc in each st* Repeat (40); sl st into first sc, ch 1
R12: *sc in next 3 sc, lsc in next st* Repeat (40); fasten off and weave in ends

To Make Frog Eyes
With B Create a Magic Circle, sc 8; sl st into first sc, with A ch 1
R1: (with A), *2 sc in each st* Repeat (16), ch 1
R3: (with MC), * sc in each st * Repeat (14), ch 1, turn
R2: (with MC), *2 sc, 1 sc in next st* Repeat (21), fasten off

*Repeat for second eye*

I personally used the MC, followed the eye pattern above and created a solid green back for my eyes.

Sew eyes onto the hat, and you have yourself a frog hat.

I personally think this wasn't bad for a fight night's work.

Remembering Our Past

My great-grandmother used to crochet, I have numerous embroidered pillowcases that have gorgeous crochet edging. These pillowcases have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. When I moved out in 2004, my mom gave me several pillowcases to take with me. I have torn a few, but I've still kept them, tears and all. I find it hard to throw away this small piece of my past, of my families past. Looking back, I think I've been holding onto my childhood, that joyful time when I was free with no obligations but to be a child. I miss those days.

Despite numerous washing's, the pillowcases still smell like home; my home.

Starting A Blog

It is amazing how quickly time passes. It seems like just yesterday I was pregnant with my Little Man, yet here he is five months old. As I get ready to return to work after spending the first five months of my son's life at home, I have to wonder when societies expectations changed. Why is it now the norm for mothers to return to work and someone else raise their child? Me, I know I'm luckier than most; having spent five amazing months at home and knowing my Little Man will be with family all day while I work.

This blog is for me, a way to chronologically share my life, my experiences, my job(s), my crafts, and my crazy family life.
